For some reason, after the race started, I turned around and saw this. It made me tear up a little...thinking of my grandpa and all those out there who suffer with diabetes.
A nice line up of bikes that the bike shop had in their tent. I don't want to think how much they were all worth.
This was heart breaking! A grandpa pins a bib on his grandson (who both have diabetes) while the grandson pins a bib on his dad. I was shocked by how many kids rode in this ride today. Some suffered with diabetes and others didn't but they were all amazing.
H.T. Hackney let us invade their parking lot today for this event.
Rick's team...Rick, Bill and Pat. 2 of those 3 came back...
I wish I could remember this lady's name but she was in a wheel chair and rode. She had a bike she peddled with her hands...amazing!
Missy Kane spoke and rode. She has a fitness show every morning on PBS at 7am that Millie watches faithfully. Millie flipped out when I told her I spoke with her and that I told Missy about Millie.
All of the riders who had diabetes got a special jersey to wear.
I have to admit, I was pretty darn excited to see this pull up. Especially since the bowl of cereal I ate at 4:30am had long ago worn off. And for the record, I don't want to see 4:30am again until I have to leave to catch my flight to Cancun in November.
Rick made it back and I really have him trained. He knew to smile for the camera.
Pat, however, still needs some training. But I think he was nearly dead so I will give him a break. They did great, they rode 68 very hilly miles in about 90 degree heat. Well done guys!
I don't know how much money was raised because people were still turning in checks today but it was a fantastic day with about 300 energetic and devoted riders. After seeing the kids who rode today, I told Millie that next year, her and I will ride. She was super excited and couldn't believe she was big enough to ride. I told her we had to train but that if I can do it, I am sure she can too, or maybe the other way around.
