The Bad And The Ugly-
So Reed looked like this on day three, having fun and looking like a cute little 5 year old.
About an hour later, he looked like this...

...and we were at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville. The kids were switching stations and he and another boy were not watching where they were going and apparently ran right into each other. Reed obviously took the hit right in the eye. I did not see it happen. I noticed Reed's group was at a new station and I was scanning the boys looking for him. He wasn't there. No big deal. I looked back at where he had been and I still didn't see him. My friend Cammie was sitting by me and she said she heard someone crying. I saw a boy laying on the ground but it wasn't Reed. I looked around again and still didn't see him. I looked at the boy on the ground again and behind him I saw a little pair of red shorts. I have never been one to immediately run to one of my kids when they get "hurt". But I did stand up and start walking that way. When I was about halfway there, the coach sat Reed up and I saw his face. Well, let me rephrase that, I saw blood. A lot of blood. A lot of blood completely covering his face. Ok, it's ok to run to him now. The coach called for the girls to bring the first aide kit and my friend Cammie, who is a nurse, came running over to help. Thank God for Cammie, seriously. She offered to go to the hospital with me. She left her kids there with another friend and hopped in the back of my car with Reed. She talked to him and tried to keep him calm and navigated me to the Children's Hospital because I had no idea where it was. They took Reed back immediately, we didn't even sit down. He finally calmed down and Cammie went to park my car. I had called my mom and Rick on the way over. My mom showed up fairly quickly and once we had talked to several nurses and consults, Cammie had her dad come pick her up and take her back to Providence to get her car. Rick did make it over around 1:00 and stayed the whole time.

They did about 10 X-rays of Reed's head and we actually saw another boy in X-ray that we knew - he swallowed a penny. We found out that nothing was broke or fractured in or around his eye and head, that was good news. They were going to do a CT but decided it wasn't needed. Now it was time for stitches. They said they were going to do a conscious sedation where he's not totally out but he's basically so drugged he won't feel it or fight them and he won't remember it. He was not a big fan of the IV but got over it quickly enough. He did try to fight a little bit during the stitches but he didn't win. The worst part was trying to get him to wake up afterward. Reed is a sleeper and he saw no good reason at all to need to wake up or open his eyes. Rick worked with him and we finally got him to keep his eyes open.

He looked a little better after the stitches and getting cleaned up. We were very lucky really, that it was just a few stitches. He was pretty swollen the next day but he said he felt pretty good, even though he couldn't open his eye.
We took him to his eye doctor the next day (after football camp, he still went because he wanted to get his T-shirt and water bottle and show off his injury aka "energy" of course!). She is a good friend of mine and she insisted I bring him in so she could look at it. She didn't even charge us, she's great!
He checked out fine so as long as we can make sure he doesn't bust the stitches open in the next few weeks, we should have a full recovery. Now, please tell me how I am supposed to keep this child from roughing around the next few weeks. Where do they sell those bubbles??
